How would you open a gate in a neighborhood without a car?

I think there’s an inductor or something underground that will trip a switch to open the gate but how would you do it without a car? i heard you can just use anything (like a big metal garbage can) that conducts electricity or a strong magnet. Just curious as to how this mechanism works.

There is a coil in the ground. A car over it has a lot of steel that increases the inductance. The increase in inductance is sensed and is used to trigger the opener. A steel garbage can would be a good choice to try.
